I have a confession to make. Olivia is three and a half years old and we have never taken her sledding. I know, I know. You see, we just weren’t winter people, and the thought of lugging sleds up hills just didn’t seem very fun.
This year, we decided to change all that. We went out and spent a small fortune on winter gear. Well, we did snag a great deal on her snowsuit and geared ourselves up, headed out to the hills…
(or, the small hill at the park behind our house).
And, it was a blast.
As new-to-the-hill sledders, we brought a few options. One of those options was the Zipfy. I’m always intrigued by the Zipfywhen we see it at Scholar’s Choice or Chapters Indigo, and Olivia was too. Despite the fact that we’ve never brought her sledding, she certainly knew what it was for.
It’s recommended for 5+ but at almost four, she got the hang of it (and we did too). It’s going to take a few runs for the kiddos to get their legs and learn to balance the sled, but she got it under ten – and then, she was a pro.
She loved that it was fast. It took her a few more turns to realise that she could stop halfway down the small hill, but I have a feeling that this feature would come in really handy for the kids to be able to control how fast they are going (since the Zipfy gets pretty speedy!).
Notes for Parents with smaller kids – If you are sledding on new snow, that hasn’t packed you are going to want to take one for the team and head down the hill yourself a few times. Heading down the hill yourself is going to pack the snow and make sure that the kiddos can zipdown the hill.
Oh, one more thing. Make sure that you use the elastic at the bottom of the snowpants. We learned that the hard way.
Kiddos might get a little frustrated trying to carry it up the hill, until they get in their groove. Though sure, you might think at first adding a cord to it to pull it upwards, this worries me when it comes to young kids sledding as a safety concern. It’s light enough for them to do it, they’ll get it.

It’s so fantastic, that we decided to share the Zipfy that was sent to us with Olivia’s cousin and go out and buy our own! She was enamoured with the artist’s series (and me too) since they’re crazy durable, like they are going to last for seasons and seasons, I bought one. There are two versions available, the regular and the Junior. I opted for the regular since she did pretty well with the version that we tried out.
