Have you ever tried to hold an eleven month old baby’s arm down while trying to make sure that the thermometer stays in place … for fifteen seconds? This winter has been one of epic illness that has left us with stomach bugs (three times), colds (all winter long) and a good bout of hacking coughs that made me wonder if we were ever going to be healthy at the same time.
On the quest to find a thermometer that was going to allow for easy temperature readings (even on a sleeping baby) but temperature readings that we also going to be accurate we’ve gone through a few thermometers. Recently, we had the chance to try out the V980 Vicks Behind the Ear Gentle Touch Thermometer with Fever InSight and see how it measured up to the worst winter of sickness we’ve ever experienced.
How does it Measure Up?
The behind the ear thermometer uses a formula that measures an accurate temperature over the skin of where the carotid artery flows to the brain. This spot is considered to be one of the most accurate places to measure temperature. How does it compare with the traditional under the arm thermometer? I tried it on Olivia (it was one degree under-the-arm thermometer) and on me (it was the same the under-arm thermometer).
Looking for a new thermometer?
At $69.99 (Babies R Us) it is higher in price than other thermometers that are designed for oral or under the arm use, but a good thermometer is one of the must-have items for baby. In fact, it’s one of the must-have items that we forgot to buy when Violet was born. She had her first cold at just a week old so we were scrambling to find a thermometer that worked. This Vicks model would have come in very handy.
It’s helping me to tell the difference between the end of the flu that seems to be trailing off around here and the mild fever that’s coming as eleven-month-old Violet seems to be cutting all of her teeth at the same time.
Ergonomic Design. Immediately I noticed that the thermometer was lightweight and easy to hold. It fit perfectly in my hand and though you think it might be tricky to get it into position right behind the earlobe, it wasn’t.
Nine Temperature Memory. For those times you phone Healthlink late in the night and haven’t tracked the temperatures to answer their questions, you can use the last nine reading memory included in the thermometer. It’s easily accessed with the ‘M’ button, making this thermometer one of the most user-friendly.
Fever Insight. The display lights up, making the temperature ratings easy to see in the dark. However, if it’s late and night and you can’t remember the fever threshold not to worry. The display will shine green for no fever, yellow for a mild fever and red for a high fever.
It’s Fast. There’s a nine second pause between the temperature readings but it takes only one second to get the reading from behind the earlobe. It’s quick enough to get in and out before the child wakes up. That’s important when you don’t want to wake up a grumpy, under-the-weather child. Plus, it’s not like other in-the-ear thermometers that are accurate only once infants reach a certain age, it’s designed for the entire family.
Auto Shutoff. You aren’t going to have to worry about wasting the batteries (it comes with batteries) because only a few seconds after you’ve finished the reading and it has been committed to the memory of the V980 Vicks Behind the Ear Gentle Touch Thermometer switches off.
