Handmade holiday gifts are one of those things that are easy to make – and getting the kids involved can make for an easy way to occupy an afternoon. Today, we started the first of our salt dough ornaments that are going to be given to the kids grandparents for their Christmas trees. We’ve tried a number of recipes and this is by far the best. The ornaments have remained white after a year in storage and it takes only a few minutes to make, ready to go as soon as you knead it out.
Tip: When you’re dealing with larger hands you might be making paperweights, not Christmas ornaments.
Salt Dough for Hand Print Ornaments
The easy air dry salt-dough recipe is – 1 cup water, 1 cup flour, 1 cup salt and 1 cup corn starch mix it all up (I added a generous dose of glitter), roll it out for handprints, finger prints or beads and air dry for 24 hours, flipping every few hours.
Mix everything together in a bowl. Use a spoon until you’re able to knead the dough. If you require additional dry ingredients to make the salt sough recipe easier to work with, add extra corn starch. If you are adding glitter, now is the time to do so. Roll out the dough and make hand and foot prints, or use cookie cutters to create Easy DIY Ornaments.
Tiny to small ornaments will be dried within twelve hours, while the larger ones can take up to four days to fully harden and dry. Some recipes call for the ornaments to be placed in the stove at low temperatures but I’ve had a hard time finding the right technique for the ornaments to ‘bake’ without getting brown and getting rid of the fantastic white style.
Use a straw to poke a hole for the ribbon through the top or corner of the ornament. For these larger ornaments, I find it easier to roll it out and have the handprint placement on a cutting board or something that you’re going to use to dry it on. When it starts to harden a little, you can transfer it to a baking rack.
Decorating Tip: When you’re decorating the ornaments you can use paint, sharpie or use glitter at the time the dough is being made to create a fun and sparkly ornament.
