There are time when Olivia gets up during the night, a lot. She will get up, ask for a drink of water, demand something to eat at midnight or just ask for two more stories, despite the fact she’s been sleeping for hours.
Most of the time, we tell her she’s crazy if she thinks that we’re going to make her something to eat at this hour and send her back to bed.
She stomps off back to her room, muttering under her breath like a tiny teenager.
But sometimes, there are those nights when we don’t send her stomping away. We let her wake up, make her a grilled cheese and fill that little belly with delicious, cheesy goodness, sit together and have a picnic on the floor, in bed, or at the table with hot chocolate.
Those ‘midnight grilled cheeses’ are a time filled with funny stories, half awake antics and delicious, cheesy snacks that are perfect for those winter nights when she wakes up hungry. They’re the perfect time for one on one heart to hearts, a few special moments with Mom and Dad and the chance to get ‘snugged up’ a second time that night.
Every so often, we will get out of bed, pause what we’re watching, put down the book and let her follow us downstairs. We’ll butter the bread, choose the type of cheese and warm up the Panini maker and spend the five minutes making a grilled cheese that’s going to create an entire adulthood of fond memories of Midnight grilled cheese.
