Puffed wheat squares are one of those treats that Grandmas are known for. Sticky, delicious and so simple to prepare, it took me a few times to get the mixture right, and a couple of recipes to find the right combination of ingredients – but I’ve done it and these are going to be a staple of those sweet afternoon snacks around here.
Puffed Wheat Squares
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup corn syrup
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 tbs cocoa
Add together ingredients in a sauce pan and boil until the mixture begins to bubble. Whisk for about 45 seconds after you see the bubbles and add to a bowl with 8 cups of puffed wheat cereal. Press into 9×13 pan and refrigerate for at least one hour before serving. These puffed wheat squares freeze very well, and you can double or triple the batches, or make them back to back, to stock the freezer with delicious, puffed wheat snacks perfect for those afternoon picnics.
We’re going to be serving these at Violet’s birthday party. They’re easy enough to serve on the dessert table and go perfect with her picnic theme. Plus, I can make them ahead of time and have them ready to serve.
Tip: If you haven’t boiled the syrup and other ingredients long enough, you can add in 1 cup of mini marshmallows to help to pull the mixture together.
