As parents, it’s easy to be apprehensive about that first dentist’s appointment. It’s new, it can be intimidating for the kids and getting them to sit still can be difficult. We’ve been to the dentist a handful of times already for regular check-ups and cleaning, to an appointment that was needed when Violet fell against the couch and loosened her tooth.
With Violet’s first appointment coming up next month for an actual check-up we’ve started the process of preparing her for a visit to the dentist by pointing out the office when we’re walking or driving by and making sure that we go to a kid-friendly office.
Successful First Dentist’s Appointments
Let them Tag Along
We brought Olivia along a quick cleaning appointment with one of us before we took her for her own appointment. She was able to get familiar with a dental office, see the dentist in action and understand where we were going when we said that we were going to have her ‘first dentist’s appointment’.
Choose a Kid Friendly Dentist
I would never choose the dentist that Jamie goes to for the kids’ first appointment. It’s not a very child-friendly office, and he’s got a bit of a reputation for being rough. Choosing a dentist for the kids, I’m looking for a kid friendly dental experience in an office that is experienced with children and makes the visit as comfortable as possible. Plus, there has to be prizes, because that’s the best part. Find a child friendly dentist near you.
Put it on the Calendar
Mention the week that you’re going that the child is going to be visiting the dentist soon. Then, on the morning of the dental visit let them know the plan for the day, including the office visit to the dentist. If you’ve got a calendar, you can put it on the calendar with all of the other fun events that month.
