I didn’t expect that’s how I was going to be left standing on the pool deck, discovering just how cold it is when you’re not in the water.
We knew one day it was bound to happen. I knew one day it was going to happen. ‘Go over there’ she said, ‘You wait for us and we are going to go on the slide, but you can’t come because it’s just for friends, Okay Mom?’
I tried not to smile as she walked over to the slide and ran excitedly up the stairs with her new friend and she gave me a finger wag telling me to wait for her at the bottom of the slide just in case I needed to talk to her.
I let her go ahead and there I waited at the bottom of the slide.
The excitement in her voice to go on the slide, the diving board and play in the pool with her older friend was catching and I couldn’t help but smile as I walked over to where Jamie and Violet were playing and told him about how I had been shunned and told to wait at the bottom of the slide for her.
The pool is freezing when you’re not in the water, waiting at the bottom of the ‘friend slide’. Next time she decides to be all grown up, I’m going to have to bring along a towel or something. And this newfound sense of independence that is still reaching out for me to wait for her at the bottom? It makes me smile to know that she’s got bounds of confidence but I’m still there for slide-catching.
