Why Tuesday? That’s floor cleaning day around here. That’s the day when Olivia will stop her friends at the door from whatever activity they’ve been playing, look deep into their eyes and remind them to take off their shoes because her Mom just washed the floor.
Good Moms do crafts.
Good Moms have patience.
Good Moms make breakfast.
Good Moms don’t yell.
Good Moms make dinner.
blah blah blah
Good Moms have hacks to make things easier.
It’s a lot of work being a ‘good mom’, but along the last five years, I’ve learned a few hacks to make things easier for me, for the kids, and for our family.
Hack: Remove Sharpie
Toothpaste, rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover, dry erase marker (from a dry erase board) and powdered dishwasher detergent can help to remove sharpie from practically any area of the house. Have rubbing alcohol on hand to remove sharpie, and so much more.
Hack: Keep a Tidy House
Have a cleaning schedule, that you kind of stick to and if you’re not using it, get it out of your house. Throughout the day, if there’s something (kid stuff) that doesn’t belong downstairs, throw it up on the landing of the stairs, or on a basket on the stairs. At a designated time every day the kids have to return their items upstairs.
If you feel like you spend 50% of your time at-home putting things back where they belong? Having specific baskets and areas for the toys played with downstairs, and making sure that the kids are putting their things back has immensely reduced the time that I spend putting things away.
Hack: Get Diapers Delivered
You order baby gates and baby gear online, why not order diapers too? The Honest Co. has a monthly subscription service for diapers + wipes, and you can sign up for a free trial to get a sample of the diapers, wipes, and cleaning supplies (and all you have to pay is the shipping). To save time, and get free shipping, you can also order diapers from Walmart and Amazon.
Hack: Set a Timer
Have to leave the park and don’t want to be the one to argue with the kids? Set the timer on your phone. When the timer goes off, it’s time to go and that’s that. Need to clean the house? Set the timer for a five or ten minute tidy and race through it. You’ll be shocked at how much you can get done in a five or ten minute tidy, and how easy you can get the kids to leave somewhere when the timer goes off.
Hack: Ditch the Pile of Art
Snap some pictures and make a cheap online photo book that you can browse through, and only keep the really momentous pieces of kid drawn art.
Hack: Cutting Grapes
Get two plates. Fill the first plate with grapes and place the second plate securely on top. Using a serrated knife, cut through the center of plates, halving all of the grapes at once.
Hack: Get Caught Up on Work
Whip up a bath tub paint recipe or snap up some bath crayons the next time you’re shopping and bring the laptop into the bathroom to camp out on the floor if you’re not getting any work finished.
Hack: Photo Happy Phone
Make albums on your iPhone to keep things organized, and order photos using a photo app, directly from your phone. Once the photos have been ordered, or put into a book, you’re able to delete them from your phone. We like to use the free Shutterfly books to make art books, from the codes released every few months.
Hack: Skip a Laundry Step
For the kids clothes, we skip a step when it comes to doing laundry. Straight out of the washer we hang it in the laundry room and either let it dry down there, or we bring it up to their room and let it dry in the closet. Usually, it ends up in the laundry room until the rack is full, but it saves a step, and a bit of energy.
Hack: Packing for Kids Vacation
Use large freezer ziploc bags to separate outfits, and label them with the kids’ names. This way, when they’re up to six or so, you’re going to be able to fit the entire outfit in the bag (including shoes or accessories) making packing simple. Get as much as air out of the bag as possible to pack more in each suitcase. At the end of the day, transfer the clothes into a cloth ‘dirty clothes’ bag to bring home.
Hack: Cutting Pizza
We were having hair cutting night hosted at a friend’s last month and I had a lightbulb moment when I noticed that they had cut the pizza with scissors. Genius way to get the thin crust pizza cut in a hurry.
