Construction sets were a favorite of mine from when I was a child. I remember working for hours together, with my Dad, on endless Meccano sets in our basement. As a parent, I want to be able to create these memories for my own children, and find the gifts that are going to give that one on one time, working together, building relationships and something awesome.
Hexbugs? What are those? I was under the impression that they were tiny robots. Nope – there’s some major building going on in these inspired robotic Construction sets. With 250+ pieces to create a giant crawling robot, including snap pieces, gears, a motor and a brain, 8+ kids will be enthralled with the process of creating their own robot, and then controlling it.
Build >>>> Program >>>> Control
Easily one of the top toys this year, after being built kids can either control the Hexbug or use the autonomous mode, and choose random or straight paths to watch the Hexbug venture around the house. Backwards, forwards, it moves many which ways, and the kids have programmed it themselves making it a fantastic addition to the ‘learning toys they don’t know are learning toys’ for 2014. They’re getting hands on experience with electronics, programming, robotics – and resulting in a fantastic toy that they’ve built themselves.
The robot can be built in about two hours, as long as you’re following the directions, but after that, the play options are endless, with sixty four modes of programming to play, just by flipping different switches inside of the brain. How fantastic is that!? I love the focus on STEM learning through play, and the fact that there is unlimited potential for play + discovery with the Hexbug Scarab.
Buy it for: the kid that’s always tinkering, the kid that’s got an interest in science, the kid that you’re trying to involve in a project, the kid that’s got a thing for remote controlled toys or the kid that’s got an interest in technology.
