When the girls were toddlers, we started a holiday tradition that began with their first Christmas. We took them along to the store, before we decorated the Christmas tree, and asked them to choose an ornament. Of course the first year, we started with their baby ornament, but the year after – we brought them along and let them choose an ornament out of the shiny wall, adding it to the collection of hand-picked ornaments in their collection.
We haven’t picked ornaments yet this year, but here are Olivia’s from her first Christmas celebrations: the baby ornament, a matryoshka doll (soft for a one year old), perry (from last year), a candy cane and a fuzzy penguin (chosen when she was two).
When she’s ready to start her own Christmas traditions, we will give her the box of ornaments that has been hand picked from her childhood, by her, and she can look through and see the progression of ornaments that she’s chosen through the years – and hopefully remember the memories that come with each of them.
So far, Violet’s got her baby ornament and a rainbow, and I bet this year she’s going to pick something just as bright and colorful from the delightful ornaments at Target the girls have fallen in love with.
Tip: to keep track of the ornaments, keep a small note when you stash them away for the year, or find a place to label the ornament with the name of the child, and the year, with a fine tipped sharpie pen.
