Kids 5+ can try out one of the new and fun slides (okay, it’s not really a slide) at West Edmonton Mall, the Hurricane. It’s essentially a giant inflatable ball filled with water that puts you on a cycle of ‘sliding’ during the ride, as it spins around after you climb through the small tunnel.
I tried it out with Olivia while we were there on our annual toddler time and build a bear date yesterday, and though she had to be convinced and had her arms around me the entire time, she stuck through it, was brave and wasn’t sure whether she really liked it or not (she preferred the blue bullet) and said that she is going to come back when she’s six.
The older kids in the line, were chatty up a storm, and obsessed with the ride. They stood in line as the ball was emptied and refilled with water each time a new person or couple of people went in.
It was fun, if you haven’t been there to try it out yet, it’s definitely something that should be on your list for kids 5+ who are brave enough to try it (you can go inside with them). If you’ve got a beginner slide rider, or a faint of heart kid, I would avoid it, as even at 5/10 speed I found it to be quite fast and I got face fulls of water. (She’s braver than I).
For younger kids (under 7) the speeds of the ride, and the overall length are lower. For the first time, I think this is a good idea, as it can be a little jarring. Before Olivia started to actually enjoy it she was grasping on to me like crazy – then, she was screaming with enjoyment.
Then, we raced down the blue bullet at least ten times – which she enjoyed way more than I did. It’s so dark on the way down you have no idea what’s coming up. I’m shocked that she liked that slide so much, I preferred the green one in the kids playground.
Tip: Slides that are open during toddler time vary, and are on a rotation. Toddler time is a great bargain, as it’s $15 for a parent and child five and under between 12-3 on Monday to Thursdays (not available during school holidays).
