You know how you read about something, have it in the back of your mind to try and never for the life of you have something that you need to do it because it’s not something that’s on your usual list? Paper bag popcorn is one of the things that I’ve been wanting to try with the girls for ages, and have never remembered paper bags when I run into Save on Foods to grab something extra that we need for dinner.
Until this week, when we needed paper bags for the surprise bags that we were opening on New Year’s Eve. After lunch, I decided that we should give it a try and Olivia happily ran off to the pantry to find the popcorn kernels.
Paper Bag Popcorn (2 servings)
1/4 – 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels
Paper bag folded over
Place the popcorn kernels into the bag, fold over the top so it’s secure and place in the microwave. Cook on the popcorn setting or for 2.5 to 3 minutes, until the kernel sounds are more than 3 seconds apart. I found that in our Microwave this happened right around the two and a half minute mark. I found that 1/4 to 1/2 cup fit best in the standard sized paper bags. Start out with the lesser amount to see how it works for your Microwave, as everyone’s microwave cooks differently.
Tip: Make sure that you are using fresh kernels, as this is going to affect the quality of the paper bag popcorn you’re creating. If you find that all of the kernels are not popping, keep it in for a few seconds longer but be careful not to burn the microwave paper bag popcorn.
It worked, we had fluffy, popcorn maker like popcorn, with only a few kernels left over. I’m pretty excited, because a popcorn maker was on my list of something that I wanted to buy for the kids, since they love Popcorn – and now we don’t have to.
Some of our favorite toppings for the popcorn are coconut oil + sprinkles, caramel, cheddar and just plain butter.
