A long weekend is extra nice to break up the middle of winter, right? If you’re spending it in-town, there’s lots to do with the family to get out there, spend some time together, unplug and just enjoy it. Family Day in Edmonton usually means we do something at-home in the morning, sleep in and have a lazy breakfast or brunch – and then ask the kids what they feel like doing. On family day, there’s no shortage of fun activities in Edmonton.
Family Day at Edmonton Public Library
We’ve got a unique array of special programs and events for you and your family to enjoy on February 16th, including clown cartels, puppet shows, and special guests like the John Janzen Nature Centre. Join us for all this free family fun and more!
Food Trucks at City Hall
Skating, food trucks, roasting bannock over an open fire – those are three of the reasons that we’re going to be checking out City Hall on Family Day. Okay, fine, mostly for the food. There’s also going to be skating (pending ice conditions) with free ice and skating rentals to make it simple to get up and go with the kids. Activities start at noon, giving you an easy morning of sleeping in.
Cirque de la Symphonie
Strongmen, Acrobats and Aerialists, Contortionists and the symphony – can it get any better than that? With performances through the weekend, children’s tickets are only $29.
Silver Skate Festival
It’s at this festival that we’re going to be able to cross off the last ice slide on our list this year – let’s just hope the milder weather returns in time for the festival. The free event is on all weekend long, with programming like the Family Fun Zone, and Dead Cold Run and a Cree Winter Camp.
Pajamas Movies + Popcorn in a Bag
Movie days, game days and making popcorn in a paper bag with the kids is one of those easy ways to stay home and enjoy the fun. Some fantastic movies that are available just in time for Family Day is the Box Trolls (the kids loved it).
Free activities are scheduled throughout the day in Morinville, as part of the Snowman Festival. Come out and take part in the deep freezer races, to get a unique experience on Family Day in Edmonton + area. You’re not going to want to miss the Snowman Judging, starting at 10 am.
Free Swimming at Harbour Pool
Looking for something to do in Fort Saskatchewan but don’t want to break the bank? On Family Day, you can swim for free at Harbour Pool between 1:30 to 4:30.
Family Day at the Legislature
Activities between noon and four and family days are going to include everything from sleigh rides and outdoor fun, and making maple syrup on sticks to indoor activities and crafts to get out of the cooler weather. It’s one of those fun and free activities for families, and you’re going to want to bring along the skates.
Family Day at the Pool in Beaumont
Toonie swims, glitter tattoos and ice cream are three of the reasons to stay in Beaumont this family day. With activities outdoors too, you can head out for hours of fun for the cost of only $2/person to head inside and warm up inside the pool.
Marvel Superheroes at Mill Woods Town Centre
If braving the crowd is more your style, you’re going to want to visit Mill Woods Town Center between noon and two on Family Day for fun activities and special appearances from your favorite Superheroes.
Tobogganing in the City
Some of the hills around the city are going to be taking part in sip and slide, providing you with free hot chocolate while the kids slide on the hills. One of our favorite places in Sherwood Park for young children is the small hill at McGhan park in Davidson Creek. It’s the perfect size for young children to come back up, and usually doesn’t get too busy.
Toonie Skiing Lessons at Strathcona Wilderness Centre
What better way to learn the ways of cross country skiing than visiting the Strathcona Wilderness Center? Toonie lessons are available at 1pm and 2:30pm, but you’re going to want to get there early to sign up. There’s lots of other activities going on, including a campfire to keep you warm and tasty treats on site.
Family Day at the Valley Zoo
From the polar bear craft table, to learning more about winter animals, there’s lots going on at the Valley Zoo for Family day 2015. There’s a scavenger hunt, face painting and outdoor fun with regular admission.
