One of our biggest refrigerator issues in the past has been ‘lost food’. You know, the leftovers, the packages of berries and the homemade caramel sauces that get pushed to the back of the fridge and become lost until you find them covered in a layer of fuzz? Yeah. I don’t remember those days with fondness.
LED lights, storage solutions that you can customize for your family (and change up every time you load the fridge with groceries) and lots of space to see everything in the fridge are three new features of the Frigidaire Gallery Custom Flex that helped us to stop finding lost food – and help to cut down the costs of groceries. After all, if you’re only buying something once, and using up those leftovers, you’re bound to save money – right?
6 Ways We Avoid Lost Food
Organize it. One of the things I love about the refrigerator, is that everything has it’s place. I keep grains stored on the bottom shelf of the door that are kept fresher in the fridge, and it helps me to stop searching through the pantry for them. Also, I keep deli products, like meat and cheese, in the drawer.
Wash Your Fruit. As soon as you get home from the grocery store, wash off the fruit and place it front and center in the refrigerator. Not only are you going to save time through the week when you’re ready to give the kids a snack, but they’re going to be able to get it for themselves.
Use clear containers. My favorite containers are Wean Green containers. If you’re easily able to see what’s in the container, you’re going to be more likely to use it. You can even write on the container with sharpie, and it will come off with a wipe, as they’re created with non-porous glass – leftover labelling is a cinch.
Leftover Lunch. A couple of times a week, I will do a ‘leftover lunch’ for the kids. Usually, when we’ve got a busy afternoon planned, and I need to get something on the table quick. This is a great time to use up those leftovers created from dinner and helps to get rid of the food that might usually go to waste.
Brighten it up. Choose a fridge that’s going to allow you to see everything. The easy to see LED lights and glass shelves, with over 100 ways to customize in the Frigidaire Gallery Custom Flex is one of the easiest ways to do this but if you’re not in the market for a new fridge just yet, you can make sure there is lots of natural light in your kitchen to avoid ‘lost food’.
Don’t Overfill Your Refrigerator. I try not to overfill the refrigerator and shop weekly, rather than once a month, to avoid the fridge being too full. This way, we can see everything that’s in there and we’re going to be able to find what we need, without having to root through to the back shelves.
The last few months that we’ve been using the Frigidaire Gallery Custom Flex refrigerator we’ve been able to make constant changes based on the season, the type of food that we’re storing in the refrigerator and even for special events like play dates and birthday parties. The custom design helps to avoid food waste, and is versatile, making it a perfect way to accommodate growing families. Learn more about the Frigidaire Gallery Custom Flex Refrigerator, here.
