Couch shopping is tedious. I hate it. I hate sitting on 900 couches at six different stores, trying to decide between the different styles available that I like and Jamie likes. It’s just not something that I particularly enjoy. When we had to replace our couch, we wanted something functional, something affordable and something that was going to be the perfect movie-night-couch. The stars aligned, and Costco’s elusive couch-season arrived – so of course, it had to be Costco.
1. The Return Policy
Legs break off? Fabric wears down? Lightning strikes it? Pretty much anything that happens to your couch – you’re going to be able to return it to Costco. You’re probably not going to get that luxury from other furniture stores – especially months, or even a year after the piece of furniture was purchased in the first place.
2. The Price
We shopped around for couches to replace the white-leather-one-we-got-online-that-looked-pretty-but-has-zero-quality-to-it and learned that you get what you pay for. The exception? Costco. For just over $1,000, we got a sectional that’s large enough for the entire family, that’s well constructed with many, many layers and most important – is priced hundreds of dollars lower, quality comparison, than other furniture stores.
3. Because You Should Buy All of Your Big Ticket Items There
Buying your big ticket items at Costco is not only going to save you money – it’s going to save you the time of running around to different stores comparing prices. Hands down, on 99% of the large item purchases we make for the home, appliances, tile for renovation etc, electronics, we’ve ended up at Costco. Buying the big ticket items there means that the executive membership is going to get you a phat rebate cheque at the end of the year (when you factor in the everyday food and supplies shopping).
4. Everyone Else Is Doing It
I don’t advocate doing what everyone else is doing, but if you look how quickly the couches come in and out of our local Costco – I like to call it the elusive ‘couch season’ you’ll know that everyone has a secret and that secret is the couches at Costco. The attractive price tag means that in order to get it, you’re going to have to shop fast. When you see it, decide, and buy. Last year, we missed the elusive couch season by days because I couldn’t make up my mind. There wasn’t a couch to be found. We had to suffer with the awfully-constructed-online-purchased-couch for another year.
5. Price Protection
If the couch does happen to stay in the store long enough for you to see the price drop on a clearance, and there is stock left in the store – you can get the difference back. Last year, this saved us $150 on the cost of a mattress set we purchased. Browse through the section, furniture is frequently on clearance. You could save even more.
