Sometimes, you just want to feel like you’re camping, without the whole assembling the tent and making a fire, and all of the hard stuff that comes with camping. For those times, there’s glamping – comfort camping, in a cabin, just outside of Jasper National Park.
KOA is a great option, and has these small cabins with a bunkbed, double bed (and even a heater) to make camping comfortable. For under $80/night, you can stay in a campground that has showers and wifi, bathrooms and board games that can be borrowed while you stay.
All you have to bring is your sleeping bags (or bedding). Sleeping bags are much easier to pack up and throw in the car than bedding, am I right? There’s just something appealing about packing for the weekend and throwing only the sleeping bags inside the Flex – and maybe the camp stove if we want to get fancy and make some breakfast grilled cheese.
Tip: Think about bringing a self-inflating mattresses that we use on our cots because the mattresses are a little less comfortable than the hotel we stayed in the night before.
The kids loved the playground, the bunkbeds, running around the wide open space and the porch swing in front of each of the cabins. They could borrow games, play with other children spending the weekend here or grab a cold drink from the bar fridge in the cabin, taking advantage of the wi-fi or watching cable tv on their down time – something they sure can’t do when we’re camping for ‘real’.
It’s close enough to Jasper that you can spend the day exploring the town, do those fun adventures and activities with the kids and come back without having to worry about your tent is going to be soaked. Charcoal barbecues are available at each cabin, and allow you to bring along food to grill.
You’re still going to feel like you’re camping though, because unless you’ve chosen a deluxe cabin, there are no bathrooms in the cabin. You still have to walk to bathrooms and showers, not in the cabins – but still, a fun way to get out and explore, without having to pack up the entire arsenal of camping supplies that you need to survive the weekend.
You can book the Hinton/Jasper cabins, check out the special events and even learn how to save 10% every time you go with the VKR membership, at www.koa.com.
