We set off earlier this week with 8 days to explore, on a roadtripwithoutaplan. Out of Jamie’s realm of comfort, I was armed with the hotels.com app, a two night cabin rental at KOA in Revelstoke, and no plans for the next six days. Maybe we would go to Seattle (a plan that was nixed when someone forgot the passports at home) or maybe we would venture to Jasper for a few days after Revelstoke.
It worked out well, with the first day of driving allowing us to discover a delicious burger joint, while we spent the second morning of the trip exploring the Enchanted Forest, Sky Trek adventure Park and Crazy Creek Hot Springs in Revelstoke. Here, Jamie went on an adventure of his own on the suspension bridge in the area, to the waterfalls – an adventure on which no one wanted to join him. According to the photos he took, we missed out, but I had some solid time in pool side, a full three hours under a gazebo while Olivia went off to make friends and Violet rediscovered her ability to swim.
At the Hot Spring, we ran into some neighbourhood friends staying an hour away at Mara Lake. They invited us to join them for dinner and a swim later, and together, we enjoyed some beers, great conversation and the most fantastic slide on the best dock we’ve ever jumped off of.
After a full day, the kids fell fast asleep and Jamie I wondered what we were going to do tomorrow. I recalled passing a sign earlier in the day mentioning something about Vancouver, and coaxed Jamie into it, since we were nearly there anyway, it made sense.
That brought us to a coin flip, the ocean or the ice fields. The ocean won over (Violet’s choice), and here we are, leaving for day three on our road trip without a plan, five more days to explore before school returns and our adventures are reserved for the weekend.
Here’s to coin flipping, adventures, and husbands willing to get step out of their itinerary planning comfort zones.
