Six Ways to Get the Most Bang for Your Lego Buck

Lori Saving Money

How to Save Money on LegoLego is high on the list this year, and usually something that we buy every single year. This year, it’s Sleeping Beauty and Photo Safari Lego Duplo (with Grandma adding on even more) and the Dolphin Cruiser and Lego movie sets for Olivia - so we know how to get rewarded when it comes to buying Lego - and get the most bang for our buck.

Think Outside the Box(ed) Set
Boxed sets of Lego are exciting. There’s something to build, the instructions and often things that you can’t find in bulk sets - but the boxed sets are also more expensive for that reason. Buying bulk boxes, or lego sets that are designed for open ended building instead of the boxed set can help to cut the costs of building the Lego collection.

TIP | If you are buying boxed sets, shop Costco when the holiday toys arrive (mid September) to get sets for $15-20 cheaper than the prices in-stores. New sets are added through the season, but the popular sets and advent calendars sell quickly.

Get Rewarded
There are a couple of perks to shopping at the Lego store; the pick a brick, and the reward program. The rewards program gives you points for dollars spent in store, and rewards of $5 off for every 100 points accumulated. With double, triple, and even five times the points events from products that are purchased online or at the Lego store, these points can accumulate quickly, earning you free Lego.

Get Extra BONUS Sets
Gifts with purchase are one of the easiest ways to get more for your money when you’re buying Lego. Toys R Us, the Lego Store and Mastermind Toys are three popular places to buy Lego and get bonuses, or extra mini sets with the Lego being purchased. Usually, it’s spend $25-30 on specific types of Lego and get an extra bonus set, with different ones every week. Shopping these Lego sets (that are often on sale in-store) and getting the extra Lego can help to build the collection for less.

Tip: these make fantastic stocking stuffers!

Get Cash Back
Target is one of my favorite places to shop for toys because of the gift card offers. Special offers with purchases mean that watching the sales you can get $5 or $10 back in gift cards with purchases. We save these cards for when we have a larger purchase at Target, helping to lower the cost. The deals can be found in the Target Canada flyer.

Buy Used
Buying used Lego can be a great way to save. Looking through online classified websites or through buy sell pages on social media networks can find great deals for bins or bags of bulk Lego, including the popular sets, for a very low prices. Putting these pieces into baskets, buckets or other formats can make perfect gifts for younger children - or a great way to build the Lego collection.

Pick a Brick - the Right Way
Picking a brick, and learning the right way to fill a cup full of Lego from the fun wall of bright colored Lego from the store can save you a bundle - compared with just filling a cup. Learning how to stack and assemble the bricks before placing them into the cup can almost double the amount of bricks that you go home with, for the same price.
