Third Kids, and Their Nurseries (Or Lack Thereof)

Lori Parenting

My sister is pregnant with her first child. We’re having our third. She is in the throes of making those decisions about the nursery; the paint color, the decals on the wall, the right furniture and oh - the blankets.

So. many. decisions.

I can remember those moments. I was thrown back into it when we went to our condo a few months ago to finalize and repair some of the things that needed it before new tenants moved in. I walked through the second bedroom and ran my fingers over the stripes we lovingly painted on the walls to make the nursery perfect. I remember searching for those last details, the crib bedding, the perfect pillows for a newborn child that wasn’t going to sleep in the room for months years.

The second time around, we began to create a space for Violet but skipped a lot of the things that we did the first time around - we knew she wasn’t going to spend time in her bedroom, as we’ve coslept with the girls.

The third time around, now, we have three bedrooms upstairs. Plans to move, probably to build, but with a bit of waiting left on our hands, the first question that everyone asks is how we’re going to manage the bedrooms. Are we going to put the girls in a shared bedroom? Are we going to make use of the bunkbeds? Are we going to put the baby in Violet’s bedroom?

Violet just left our bedroom within the last six months and has begun to sleep and fall asleep regularly in her bedroom. This time around, I’m not worried about decorating a nursery, a space where I know that we, as a family, didn’t rely on. This time around, I’ve learned what’s worked for us and have chosen pieces of furniture that we can use this time around, and next time around, and that can be easily stored away when they’re not.

The Bloom Alma Mini Folding crib is one of those things that can be easily tucked away in a corner of our bedroom, and used as a bassinet and crib, without taking up too much space. It’s the perfect solution for cosleeping, and for a third child, who you’ve realized, really doesn’t need that much space after all.

The crib features open slats on all four sides, 2 adjustable mattress heights, easy folding for storage and for transport, solid wood design and lockable castors. You can see it in person, at buybuyBaby stores. It’s a bright pop of color, a design that fits well in small spaces, and a crib that has a small footprint for third-babies-who-live-in-their-parents-bedrooms.
