6 Ways to Protect Babies + Toddlers from the Sun

Lori Tried it - Loved It

As a parent, there are very few things that I could be considered ‘helicopter parent’ about, but sun protection is one of those things. From sunscreen to gear and products for infants too young to wear sunscreen, we’re diligent with sun protection.

Here are some of the ‘gear’ that can help to protect your little ones from the sun:

Kidco Peapod | For the littlest ones that are too young for sunscreen, and part of families on the go, the Peapod has UV protection, for children between 1-5, as a shelter from the sun while you’re out and about. The lightweight, and flat-pack design makes it easy to bring with you on-the-go and is quick to set-up, with mesh for ventilation.

UPF Swimwear | Long sleeve swimwear provides a sort of wearable sunscreen, with protection built into the fabric. You’ll find a great selection of infant and toddler swimsuits with UPF 50 protection at buybuy BABY, to provide added protection in addition, or as an alternative, to sunscreen.

Hats | Browsing through the store, I noticed the i play Sunflap Hats. Lightweight, with a quick strap for infants and toddlers learning to keep hats on their heads, and the addition of a flap on the back for additional protection, the hats provide ultimate sun protection for those long summer days, from the playground to the beach. Plus, they’re available in a wide range of colors, and super affordable.

Umbrella Stroller with UPF Protection | Looking at the 2016 collection of umbrella strollers, you’ll notice that many of the brands have adopted an extended canopy, and a reflective strip at the end of the canopy, a small change that helps to direct sunlight away from the infant or toddler, in the stroller. The best part? You’ll find this feature in a variety of brands, and price points.

Solar Netting | If you’re a parent, you know the value in products that are versatile. Products that can be used to cover a pack and play, the stroller, and everywhere in between. Solar netting can be used for multi-purpose sun protection for infants and toddlers, providing 85% UVB and 82% UVA protection. It’s a great choice for infants born in the summer - when you don’t want to put sunblock on their sensitive skin.

Mustela After Sun Spray | Sometimes, getting a bit too much sun happens. When it happens, it’s useful to have the right products on hand. Mustela After-sun-spray can help to soothe the skin after sun exposure.

You can find all of the products above, at buybuybaby.ca. This post has been brought to you by a partnership between Frugal Edmonton Mama and buybuy BABY.
