How Much Are You Paying for Cable? | Tips to Reduce Your Cable Bill

Lori Saving Money

How much are you paying for cable? Us, we are up to $140 per month (which seems like a lot for cable and internet) so I decided to contact Shaw to see what we could do to reduce the cost of cable, as we could likely live without HD Channels that were making up the bulk of our $99 package/month cable costs.

I decided that we really didn’t need all of the theme packages that were available in the package we currently have and although ‘it killed’ Frugal Dad a little, we decided to nix the HD channels - reducing our cable costs to only $34.95/month for the personal basic plan. Shaw suggested contacting 310-SHAW to see if we were eligible for a promotion to reduce the price of internet - as that also seems really expensive, at the minimum cost of $45/monthly.

I’ll be searching for lower cost internet packages soon - but it was a successful reduction of 50% off our cable costs. Here are some of the ways to reduce your bill:

Cut Down the Channels
Cut the channels. Chances are you don’t watch some of the channels you have. Cut the channels or channel packages and save.

Contact the Cable Company
Ask questions, ask for discounts, ask to determine whether you are eligible for promotions and contact your cable and internet company to see how you can reduce your bill. Chances are, you can reduce the cost of your cable in half (though it might mean nixing the HD programming!)

Find Cheaper Alternatives to Cable
Find alternatives to Cable. Netflix and Apple TV are two of the alternatives that we were considering for the summer - when we were going to get rid of the cable completely for the summer months. We decided to cut back to basic channels - saving the cable, for now!

How much are you paying for cable? Do you have any alternative tips to reduce the cost of television?
