There’s something about visiting a county fair where the kids can run from ride to ride, their voices in the wind as they exclaim each ride their favourite, while parents follow along. This year, during the Westlock & District Agricultural Fair, you can experience a county fair, midway and so much more, August 19th to 21st, 2016.
Want a few reasons to make the road trip?
The Country Midway
Like we talked about above, our kids rejoice when we leave the city for a Midway and they can run wild screaming about which ride they’re going to go on next, without us following closely behind as we would likely do in the city. Go during times when there are unlimited ride passes or bracelets available (Friday 3-10 pm), and get the best bang for your buck as the kids enjoy the rides into the sunset.
The Parade
There’s something about a small town parade that always makes it a welcome addition to our summer bucket list. Whether it’s the higher chance that there are going to be floats that throw candy for the kids, or the better chance that you’re going to get a front row seat, the parade should be your starting point if you’re going to spend a day at the fair.
Miniature Chuckwagon Racing
The miniature houses at the Race Track in Mountie Park beside the Spirit Centre will have the kids in awe, with how quickly they move - some say they think they’re mini’s that think they’re thoroughbreds, and the kids will enjoy the ponies as part of the fair. The mini chucks run Friday and Saturday night, before the Main Chuckwagon races, the main Chucks and Chariots run all three days Friday and Saturday night and Sunday morning.
The Demolition Derby
On Sunday, this show is a must-do for those kids interested in cars, and demolition - we know more than a few parents that would be into this show, too. Track set up begins at 4pm, with the Demo to start immediately after, make sure you get there early for the best seats.
See the Canadian Tractor Museum
With your gate admission to the Westlock Fair, you’ll receive free admission to the Canadian Tractor Museum. This hidden gem is open all weekend long and is perfect for the down time between the Midway, and the drive back to Edmonton.
The Petting Zoo
In addition to the fun at the Midway, family friendly activities and shows to see while you’re at the Fair, our kids get most excited about a visit to the petting zoo. There’s nothing better than snuggling baby animals when you’re at the fair - and it’s one of the places we spend most of our time (aside from the Midway).
The Bench Show
Kick it oldschool with the Bench Show. This is like the county fair of old where you enter your crafts, or baking and try to win prizes. Like getting the blue ribbon for the best pie at the county fair - it’s a cool throwback and reason to check out the Fair! Did you know that you can even enter your own items in the show, even if you’re from out of town?
Shop the Market
In addition to the Midway, the fair hosts fantastic opportunities to shop for everything from produce to handmade goods in the Vendor’s Market. These types of fairs are where we find many of the hidden gems, and great discoveries within communities close to Edmonton. I like to leave the kids at the Midway with Dad (bring along another family to make this easier) and sneak away for a few moments, shopping the local wares - perfect for bringing home.
