Passion for learning new skills isn’t something that should go away once we’re finished school. Exploring, discovering and learning are an essential part of my happy adulthood – and in Edmonton we’re lucky to have so many options so the learning never has to stop.
Metro Continuing Education has cooking, photography, art, language, home, career and finance, with topics from couples massage to mortgages. Located throughout the city, the continuing education classes are a great way to get out and discover a new interest or try something that you’ve always wanted to learn. For me, they top the list of things to do on a night out – after all, if you’re not learning, you’re aging, right?
With 350+ personal and professional enrichment classes to choose from through the year – I’ve picked a few of my favorites (and added Being a Landlord: Legal Aspects to my adultier-adult bucket list).
Hula Hooping – An Introduction
Hooping is good for your health and creative self-expression and a ton of fun! Even if you have never hooped before, you will learn the basics of on-the-body hooping (including your waist, chest and knees) as well as off-the-body hooping tricks using your hands. Hoops will be provided for use in class if you don’t have your own, and there will be hoops for sale if you want to take one home!
Light and the Photographer
Understanding how light impacts a photo is an essential skill for any photographer. In this one-day workshop, you’ll go beyond simple flash photos to taking full advantage of good light to enhance your images. Discover the basic techniques for controlling light using reflectors, gobos and flash. The class will include demonstrations on the use of natural and artificial light, as well as direction on how to conduct your own lighting experiments with your photographs. You will learn tips and tricks for creating polished and dynamic lighting that can set the mood and capture an audience.
Calligraphy – The Italic Hand
With its flowing pattern and old-world elegance, calligraphy is a beautiful and enduring art form. Using a Pilot parallel pen, learn the basic stroke sequence and letter shapes of a monoline alphabet with a focus on using the Italic Hand. You will then repeat the basic letter forms using the broad edge of this versatile pen. Try your hand at a letter assignment to work on the practical application of hand lettering.
Calligraphy, photography enrichment and hula hooping are like the trifecta of Moms night out classes. We can learn how to better use natural light to take photos, learn to make those fantastic hand-lettered signs that we see all over Pinterest and do something active, and fun, while we spend an entire hula hoop class as a throwback to our childhood. Does it get much better than that?
